Seagulls run amok in Oslo. Christer, a man on his way to work, gets a load of bird-poop on his shirt. Standing in front of the washing machine at home, he suddenly remembers that he has this month’s rent, in cash, stashed in the shirt pocket. In a panic, he rips out the main fuse to stop the washer. This seemingly insignificant move sets off a domino effect, resulting in a multi-plot drama, revolving around the sad stories of several different characters. An old man dies, setting his 40-something daughter free to experience the world on her own for the first time. And a happy housewife, living the perfect, idyllic nuclear-family lifestyle, realizes that something is missing, and makes a run for it.
Eva Sørhaug’s film reflects, in a dark and humorous way, on the power that everyday chance occurrences have over people. The sunny footage evokes a sense of false wellbeing, as the city of Oslo soon turns into something very ominous, reminiscent of Hitchcock and his birds.
