“That’s so sad!”, Jill, the girl Tim fancies burstsout when she hears what Tim’s parents do: hismother, Jeannie Dwight, is a cook and amateurstand-up comedian and his father is a one-hitwonder country artist hoping to get his glorydays back. With his parents divorced, Tim mustcare for his disabled brother and handle hisproblems alone. He’s shy, lives with his motherand his record with women is disastrous. Butwhen Tim meets the fun-loving but insecureJill, everything seems perfect – except for hisjealous mother. This Australian coming-of-age story becamea hit when shown at the 2007 Sundance festival. It’s an exact portrayal of being 20 and eagerto grab life, but not knowing how to do it. Butmost impressive is Brenda Blethyn’s creation ofthe mother who is unwilling to realize that she needs to let go of her children, as well as of herdream of becoming a successful artist.
