Just thinking about cleaning up after a crimescene or grizzly car accident is unbearable formost people. Which is why, in reality, the taskis performed by special cleaners. In RennyHarlin’s newest film “Cleaner”, Samuel L.Jackson – playing a single-dad and ex-copnamed Tom – gets the ungrateful job. No oneis to be trusted and everyone is a suspect whenTom gets framed after cleaning up a murderthat the police didn’t know happened. A closeupimage of a blood-drenched leather couchshows the viscous fluid being wiped off in slowmotion. The contrast between the red liquidand lucid white toilet paper reveals action-manHarlin might have been awarded for a WorstDirector Razzie Award four times, but “Cleaner”is not only about enjoying a classic nail biterwith unexpected plotschemes and unbearable tension. It is also a well-composed neo-noirabout the exquisite pleasure of watching everytrace of dirt and blood disappear from a bloodsmearedwindow in fast forward.
