In Chocolate the leading heroine, autistic Zen, will stop at nothing to get money to treat her mom’s fatal cancer. Zen has the mind of Rainman and the body control of Jackie Chan, and to the great pleasure of all kung-fu fanatics, fear is not an interfering factor for her. She is more than happy to unleash a barrage of martial arts skills on the gangs that owe mother money since her criminal days.
With a touch of the violent female fighters from the Japanese Yakuza adventures of the 1970’s, Norifumi Suzuki’s obscure Sex and Fury being a strong influence, director Prachya Pinkaew knows how to get the best out of his subjects. Hard-hitting wonder child JeeJa Yanin, performing all the innovative and acrobatic stunts herself, is a perfect match for the story, making the oddly named Chocolate a pure crowd pleaser. Add some grandiose settings and toes being cut of, and you have topnotch Hong Kong styled martial arts entertainment.
