Have you heard the old folklore about the changeling? In 2008, Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie show us that the story is true, that it actually took place in Los Angeles in 1928, and that reality is often more horrifying than fiction.
One Saturday morning, single mother Christine Collins leaves for work, and when she returns her son Walter has mysteriously vanished. After a month of searching, he is finally returned to her during excessive media coverage. But at home Christine starts to question if the boy is really her son.
Based on the infamous Wineville Chicken Murders, living legend Eastwood recreates the 1920’s Los Angeles with a meticulous sense for detail. Changeling chronicles the blatant corruption within the LAPD, as Christine struggles to get the police to reopen the case of her missing son.
Jolie’s low-key performance as the mother, carried by Eastwood’s sensitive direction, is an artistic milestone in her career. Thematically, Changeling can be described as a companion piece to Eastwood’s award winning 2003 drama “Mystic River”, only set in a different era.
