While waiting on death row, Jang Jin tries tocommit suicide in the most bizarre way, using atoothbrush as his main tool. From her suburbanview in a dead marriage - with her daughterthe only link to her boring husband - youngfemale sculptor Yeon learns of the prisoner’sfate on television and decides to pay him a visit, claiming to be his ex-girlfriend. A connectiongrows between Jang Jin, who has becomeunable to speak, and Yeon, who decorates hiscell and speaks to him, but not to her family.Set in Seoul, “Breath” tells its story withblack humor, contrasts and Kim Ki-duk’srecognizable strong visuals. Yeon’s strikinglycolorful decoration of the cell walls draws adramatic distinction between their meetingsand the gentler, softened touch of Yeon’s dullapartment and her life on the outside. Each of her visits to the prison is seasonally themed, and the love story is told as much in images,mise-en-scène and lighting, as with words.“Breath” is a voyage through the pure art ofcinema and all the possibilities it contains.
