Brando

by Mimi Freedman, Leslie Greif

He changed acting for forever, taught JamesDean how to be a rebel and always kept anuncompromising integrity and stubborn idealismin his, by the years increasingly heavier, figure.Three years after his death, magnetic actorMarlon Brando remains a mystery. “There isbefore Brando, and there is after Brando”, MartinScorsese says in this documentary that includesseveral interviews with Brando’s friends andfamily. Using never-before-seen footage andrecordings of Brando himself, directors MimiFreedman and Leslie Greif present differentfaces of the great actor’s long life. Startingoff in the 40’s when Brando enters the NewYork stage as a handsome Midwestern boy, following him into the 50’s as he plays Johnnyin “The Wild One”, becomes a male role modelinspiring James Dean and Elvis Presley, refuses an Academy Award for his appearance in “TheGodfather” in 1973, and then turns his back onHollywood. He returned to the screen only a fewtimes therefter, usually for money - seldomlyshowing more than glimpses of his earlierbravado. A part of the Turner Classic Moviesseries, “Brando” had its international premiereat the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
