Anna is a charismatic poet living in Reykjavik with her two sons. But since it’s hard making a living as an artist on Iceland, her main source of income is selling marijuana. One day she decides to give it all up to travel the world with her kids. Her cell phone is hot stuff for other dealers, but a seemingly easy sell leads to an adventurous trip across Iceland. In the meantime, her clients gather at her house, an assembly that escalates into a dizzy party.
After a number of films dealing with heavier subjects, critically acclaimed director Sólveig Anspach returns with a warm screwball comedy. Back Soon has the elements of a road movie, where the main character is caught in a series of absurd situations on her journey across the country.
Just about every Icelandic stereotype you can think of is mocked, and a spontaneous tone is set thanks to improvisation. The picturesque landscapes, yet another cliché, are fully used as a poetic backdrop to this surreal and magical trip, constantly accompanied by Sigurdur Gudmundsson’s groovy reggae music and thick clouds of pot smoke.
