“She’ll be back with you in two weeks” is a phrase that, when delivered by a doctor, is most commonly greeted with tears of relief. To the protagonist of “Bába,“ they are instead the most disheartening words ever uttered.
Trapped in her own home by filial obligations, Veronika spends her days taking care of her dying grandmother. Powerless to control her own life, she comes to realize that her grandmother’s medicine bottles give her the power over life and death. Director Kirchnerová’s debut film is an unflinchingly honest family drama.
