Cold, grey concrete buildings – leftoversfrom Soviet architecture – are the backdropof this top-notch aesthetic tale of modern dayexistentialism. Through reckless violence, repetitive erotica and heavy drinking, “AutumnBall” portrays six drifting lives. Aspiring youngwriter Mati is surrounded by books, but hasnothing to write; his isolation and frustrationgrow into a torment of comical proportions whenhe gets caught spying on the sexual encounterof an ex-girlfriend. However, loneliness bringsthe characters closer as they relate to eachother’s suffering. Preferring unusual answers,“Autumn Ball” suggests that hope can be foundin friends, sex, a bottle or in children’s toys –whatever is needed to cope with the Estonianday. Dedicated “to all men with gentle soulsand weak livers”, “Autumn Ball” comes with a Roy Anderssonesque cinematography and apost-rock soundtrack. The film is treated withcare by its parent, the new Estonian directorialhope, Veiku Õunpuu, who stands on the edge ofdesperation and laughs down into the ravine. This, his dark love letter to his home country, isblood-tasted entertainment all the way.
