Baz Luhrmann, the writer and director who stunned the world with Moulin Rouge in 2001, is back with yet another grand romantic tale. This time, instead of glamorous and gay Paris, he has chosen 1940’s Australia as his backdrop. Add two of the country’s most famous actors, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, and you have an adventurous love story of epic proportions.
Lady Sarah Ashley, a posh British aristocrat, arrives in Australia to search for her husband, only to discover that he is dead. She inherits a cattle ranch, approximately the size of Belgium. To save her sole asset from a hostile take-over, Lady Ashley and her reluctant, roughneck drover must get the 2 000-strong herd across the continent. The duo starts their journey through the barren wilderness, which will take them through hardship, passion, life-changing choices and World War Two.
