Seven years after his success with “Chopper”,director Andrew Dominik returns with anotherfilm surrounding the life of a legendary criminal. This time it’s the story of 19th-century outlawJesse James, played by Brad Pitt, who wasawarded best actor at the 2007 film festival inVenice for his quietly vicious performance. The film takes off in 1881, as Jesse Jamesand his gang team up with the Ford brothersfor one last train robbery. When Jesse returnshome to his wife and kids, he finds himself stuckwith young Robert Ford, a long-time admirer. Abond develops between the two with Ford as anobsessive fan, taking after James in every way.Slowly, as Ford progresses from admirer intoa Judas-like character, James moves closerand closer to his inevitable death, making thefilm just as much a Greek tragedy as a classic Hollywood western.Shot in a palette of autumn colors and with aneerie score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, “TheAssassination of Jesse James by the CowardRobert Ford” leaves a mark of pensiveness thatstays with you long after the last frame.
