Promising Turkish drama director and writer Ümit Ünal delivers a psychological chamber play for his third feature. Set in an almost empty flat in Istanbul, we follow two urban middle-class couples over a decade: Elder and Gül, Selda and Veli. Elder and Veli are business partners, and Selda and Elder grew up together. While the storytelling is moving back and forth over time, as well as mixing in short episodes of the daily activities taking place in the apartment, such as the filming of television commercials and movies, they indulge themselves in extramarital relationships, broken trusts and other forms of betrayals.
In the roar of the financial and cultural chaos that Turkey has gone through over the last twenty years, Ara, meaning between, space and distance in Turkish, is a reference to the main characters’ in between-ness, both in society at large and in their own relationships.
