It's 1961, and the London suburb of Twickenham is not the most exciting place to be. At least not according to Jenny, a bright 16-year old who can't wait for adult life to put an end to suburban boredom. When Jenny meets David, a charming man of the world in his early 30's, she becomes infatuated with both his refined lifestyle and his distinguished circle of friend. Suddenly, she is tempted to abandon her family and her dream of embarking on a career as a successful academic. How could a spinster life behind a desk compete with all the sophisticated fun David provides her, and what exactly is more liberating?
22-year old Carey Mulligan puts on a simply enchanting performance as Jenny. Brimming with precocious naïveté, she is like a younger incarnation of Holly Golightly, perfectly balancing classy urbanity and teenage ineptness.
Based on the memoirs of British journalist Lynn Barber Danish director Lone Scherfig turns Nick Hornby's sharp screenplay into a classic coming-of-age comedy, efficiently set in post-war, pre-swinging London.
