Directors Peter Brosens and Jessica HopeWoodworth’s ALTI PLANO is a striking explorationof the universal human emotions grief, loss anddespair. Largely set in the Andes, this is thetale of two seemingly disparate women whosoon bridge the cultural abyss that separatesthem in an emotional alliance. Grace is a warphotographer, torn and disillusioned after havingbeen forced at gunpoint to capture an imageof her guide’s execution in Iraq. Meanwhile,in the small mountain village Turubamba inPeru, soon-to-be bride Saturnina prepares herwedding, surrounded by death and illness causedby spillages of mercury.
The raw and unpolished camerawork goesbeneath the skin of the tormented characters, giving the film an almost documentary feel.Interlaced storylines are bound together bysweeping, meditative pictures of the barren, mountain landscape accompanied by anunsettling soundtrack. Based on real events,ALTI PLANO shows the consequences of humanactions without pointing fingers or takingsides.
