Simon, a fourteen-year-old high school student, is troubled by his parents’ mysterious death. When assigned a translation task at school, he writes himself into a story of a planned terrorist attack, and passes it off as non-fiction. This doesn’t sit well with his uncle, Tom. The paper also causes a massive controversy in the community, partly because Simon’s teacher Sabine sanctioned the writing.
Nothing is all too obvious in Adoration. The viewer is constantly challenged to figure out what is real and what is not. Director Atom Egoyan’s take on terrorism and intolerance is driven by Simon’s own personal coming-of-age perspective, as well as the tale of a family torn apart by tragedy. With its directorial trademarks, like the fascination for technology, memory and identity, Adoration is a characteristic Egoyan movie, standing in direct relation to his previous acclaimed work. Egoyan’s wife, Arsinee Khanjian, plays the role of Sabine
