In Acné, Uruguayan director Federico Veiroj revisits the main character from his 2004 short film As Follows, Rafael, the young man who is taken to a prostitute to lose his virginity after his Bar Mitzvah. Rafael is now a regular customer at the local brothel, his absent and wealthy parents providing the cash. With a face full of pimples and an internal struggle to find confidence and a decent self-image, he views his life with little or no enthusiasm. He is 13 years old and has more sexual experience than all kids his age, but he has still never been kissed in a truly loving way. For Rafael, there is no higher desire in life.
Instead of the usual adolescence plot of looking for that first steamy sexual encounter, this South American independent filmmaker focuses on true love. Federico Veiroj tackles the classic theme of teenage lust and anxiety with gentle black humor, mixing the gloominess of a neglected childhood with the excitement of emerging adulthood.
