Absurdistan

Absurdistan

by Veit Helmer

Temelko and Aya, two teenagers living in an isolated desert village, are madly in love. Disaster strikes when the water supply runs dry due to the laziness of the men in charge of maintenance. This gross misconduct makes the women go on a sexual strike, which is bad news for the young couple planning their first romantic night together. As the war of the sexes intensifies, it’s up to Temelko alone to solve the water crises.

Critically acclaimed director Veit Helmer delivers a daring and distinct comedy shot in Azerbaijan. This is basically a slapstick burlesque, with loads of absurd situations and twists, with streaks of the silent movie era due to the minimal use of dialogue. The two protagonists tell the story through distinguished voice-overs. In all its myriads of different satirical cinematic styles, Helmer’s variation of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata also possesses a subtle sensual tone.
