“Look after those that look after you, fuck offthose that fuck off you”. That is Manchestercrime boss Dominic Noonan’s motto, also madeinto an acronym-alias: Lattlay Fottfoy. Being adevoted catholic, a father of two, and openlygay, this complex vigilante guides directorDonal MacIntyre around his kingdom in thedocumentary, “A Very British Gangster”.The answers to MacIntyre’s rather boldquestions to the gangster boss are surprisinglyhonest. One minute Dominic is dodgingconvictions, the next he’s looking straightinto MacIntyre’s camera making cautiousconfessions, taking the term “allegedly” to awhole new level.Apart from the interviews, MacIntyre forgeslow-budget TV news segments with somemore or less staged scenes with a well-known soundtrack, paying homage to crime movieslike “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and“Reservoir Dogs”. His portrait of a real-life TonySoprano simultaneously confirms and shattersthe gangster stereotype.
