In a unique co-production between Australia and Israel, Tania Rosenthal, using stop-motion animation technique, examines the meaning of hope in post-modern society. “$9.99” has been called an international dream team production, combining script and directing from Israel’s most happening artists, with the voices of some of Australia’s most celebrated actors, including Geoffrey Rush and Anthony LaPaglia.
“What is the meaning of life? Why do we exist?” Dave Peck, a spiritless 20-something, is unemployed and still living at his father’s place. He’s meek, and does not even try to find some kind of purpose to fill. That is, until he sees advertising for a book that, for the modest price of just $9.99, will provide all the answers. But just reading about the secrets of life is not enough for Dave. Our protagonist is to preach this newly found knowledge to the rest of the world, meaning the burlesque crew that the other tenants in his building consists of. Like a sloven ex-magician, or a single man smoking pot together with tiny two-inch students.
