These days it seems we are hell-bent on creating technology with intelligence that rivals the human brain. While we’re not quite there yet, with voice recognition technology and advanced robotics, we’re well on our way. In “9”, however, society is already there, and it isn’t good. The machines have taken over. The human race has been obliterated, and artificial intelligence reigns. Only 9 and his team of fellow rag dolls can salvage the legacy of civilization. The dolls themselves are, in fact, machines (created by a scientist just before the end of mankind) but possess something the evil machines don’t – emotional intelligence.
With a voice ensemble comprised of more Hollywood names than a red carpet, this animated dystopian sci-fi is a warning of what might come. “9” is an extension of Ackers’ Academy Award-nominated short film of the same name from 2004, which grabbed the attention of Tim Burton, who signed on as executive producer. Following a steampunk aesthetic, “9” presents an apocalyptic vision that echoes disaster actions such as “Mad Max” and epic dramas like “The Road.”
