Winner of best film, Stockholm International Film Festival 2007
Set in chilly Bucharest during the years of thefading Ceausescu regime, with fear of the secretpolice, Securitate, always present, directorCristian Mungiu uses abortion to tell a storyabout a marketless society where everythingis for sale.Young Otilia suffers a series of assaults asshe helps her roommate go through with anillegal abortion in a hotel room. Leaving thepotential emotional turmoil of an abortionaside, and inspired by the realism of theDardenne brothers and the cinematography ofMichelangelo Antonioni, Mungiu paints a darkstory of oppressed people going to any length toget ahead, even if it means trading each otherin. It is also a film about a friend who, no matterthe cost, won’t back-off once she has made herpromise to help. “4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days” is intensemodern realism and the film won the GoldenPalm at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
