At a nursing home for the elderly, a nurse, Anna, and her assistant, Hans are slowly, almost catatonically, going about their duties. Fate has dealt them a rough hand, and their hopes of forgetting the past are dashed with the arrival of the now old and fragile Gertrud. It turns out that she has a complicated and twisted history with Anna, Hans, and the nursing home, which used to be an orphanage. The linearity of time seems to vanish when past and present is interwoven in this place of secrets and darkness.

With her feature debut film, director Valentina Pedicini takes us to a menacing and cold environment. Based on the historical abuse of hundreds of children from the Yenisch people in the 1970s, Pedicini weaves a tale of mystery and abandonment. Through the observational qualities of a documentary paired with a strong sense of mystery, the audience is drawn into the film’s dreamlike world. »Where the Shadows Fall« is a dark and powerful experience that will leave no one unaffected.
