Rodeo rider Brady finds himself at a crossroads in life after a serious accident forces him out of the saddle. Even though he now has a steel plate in his skull, Brady is not sure that he can truly abandon the world of horseback riding. The fate of his best friend Lane illustrates the difficult choice that Brady must make; a once talented rider, Lane is now disabled after suffering a head injury, and his situation functions both as a cautionary tale and as an example of perseverance in the face of adversity. Brady must choose between the steel that is in his head, and all that it forebodes, and the horseback riding that is in his blood, and all that it promises.
Utilizing long, visually stunning takes, Chloé Zhao explores the prairies of the American heartland with urgency and authenticity while delivering an emotionally involving drama about an existential dilemma. Zhao draws on the lives of the actors themselves to create a sensitive portrayal of masculinity that has been praised at film festivals around the world.
