As a dramatic story device, the dinner party is hard to beat. Confined to an apartment, couples gather to discuss careers, politics and relationships while drinking considerable amounts of alcohol. They are almost constructed to make people argue, confess well-buried secrets, or behave improperly. It is in this context Sally Potter places her stellar cast, which includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Timothy Spall and Patricia Clarkson.

The titular party is held to celebrate Janet’s (Scott Thomas) appointment as health minister. Invited guests include a politically disillusioned old friend with her new-agey partner, a tense young banker and, of course, Janet’s ill-bodingly quiet husband. With an uproariously funny yet confrontational take on the situation, »The Party« is more reminiscent of the work of Mike Leigh than »Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf«. Best known for her gender and time bending cult classic »Orlando«, Potter shows an equal talent for dark farce in this tight, tense and hilarious film.
