With his best days behind him, the former cowboy film star Lee Hayden is reduced to reading barbecue-sauce commercials with his deep, soulful voice. Estranged from his ex-wife and daughter, Lee’s existence has become increasingly lonesome. Unexpectedly, however, a cancer diagnosis becomes a turning point as he grasps to get a hold of his life through interactions with old acquaintances as well as a new relationship with a considerably younger stand-up comedian.

Co-written by Brett Haley and Marc Basch with Sam Elliot in mind, the script draws a lot from the real life of its star. Dominating the screen with a commanding yet understated charisma, Elliot provides one the foremost performances of his career in a beautifully observed film that breathes new life into a classical storyline. Set against the dry, sun-drenched landscapes of California, »The Hero« is an affecting and unsentimental tale of late-life redemption and rebirth.
