When ninety-two-year-old German Eduard Leander’s wife dies, his daughter decides to put him in a home. Stubbornly refusing, he instead embarks on a journey to Ukraine with the hope of finding Svetlana, a woman with whom he fell in love while fighting alongside the Cossacks against the Red Army during World War II. Despite the fact that the dark and dramatic experiences of his past have affected his family, Eduard has never talked about them. Somewhat unwillingly, his granddaughter Adele joins him on a journey that turns out to be more dramatic than anyone could expect.
Coinciding with the outbreak of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, old and new war experiences collide as the duo encounter Lev, a young man unwilling to choose between his conflicting identities. Helmed by prize-winning director Nick Baker-Monteys and starring Jürgen Prochnow (»Das Boot«), this gripping drama about love, forgiveness and the long shadows of the past sends its protagonists on an emotionally challenging road trip through a land in turmoil.
