Nasrin has a dilemma: either she stays in an unhappy marriage, or she divorces her husband but loses custody of her daughter in the process. Instead of merely picking the less bad alternative, Nasrin makes her own way when she takes her daughter with her and moves, without her husband’s approval. But when he suddenly reappears in their lives, their situation changes dramatically.
Focusing on similar themes of gender inequality and marital conflicts as other critically acclaimed Iranian films like »A Separation«, director Ebrahim Irajzad’s feature debut is a fresh addition to the country’s internationally lauded cinema. With a critical eye directed at social injustices and the limited possibilities of women in Iran, »Searing Summer« is as emotionally engaging as it is important. Starting out as a naturalistic drama, Irajzad plays with the stylistic tropes of thriller and even horror during the film’s second half, when Nasrin finally decides that enough is enough, for her own sake as well as her daughter’s.
