When looking for the right boy to play 12-year-old Pedro, director Córdova knew he needed someone with a bit of that grittiness the depiction of a Caracas street kid requires. He struck gold when finding the talented Reggie Reyes who, paired with the fantastic Giovanny García, lends a certain touch of rough realism to the story of a father and a son exposed to the trials of running a violent Venezuelan gauntlet.

With a firmer grasp on the logic of lawlessness than his son, Andrés has no choice but to grab Pedro and run when the latter comes out bloody-handed from a clash with a boy from the block. The man who used to be an absent but hard-working father becomes a guardian angel, and the two grow closer in face of danger.

Dynamics of class and justice are explored in an impressive debut, aided by handheld cameras and an on-location chronological shoot. »La Familia« presents an urgent and authentic story in which the characters are not just fleeing retribution but also a destructive culture of violence.
