Before starting his PhD studies at a prestegious university, Gabriel Buchman has set aside a year to travel the world. After spending ten months on the road, he arrives in Africa, determined to discover the continent and its people from the viewpoint of a “traveller” rather than tourist. Joined by his girlfriend, the couple is set for Mount Mulanje in Malawi on a journey that will prove to have dire consequences.
Based on a true story, director Fellipe Barbosa chonicles the compelling journey of his former classmate, incorporating letters, photographs and the testimonies from people he met along the way. Mixing professional actors with locals playing themselves, Barbosa creates a fascinating and idiosyncratic homage to a dear friend. Without glorifying Buchman and his naïve and priviligied perspectives, »Gabriel and the Mountain« depicts a young man with a sincere longing to get to know the world. Nuanced, vivid and with a deeply humanistic world-view, the film is a revelatory experience.
