In Alexander Payne’s new film, downsizing is, quite literally, the solution to the world’s problems. With growing pollution and overpopulation, a Norwegian scientist, played by Rolf Lassgård, has discovered a solution: downsizing human beings. By shrinking people down to just a couple of inches tall, they hope to improve the conditions on Earth.

This dream of a better life attracts the Safraneks, a married couple touchingly played by Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. They soon trade their stressful and chaotic lives for a seemingly perfect existence in their new miniature home Leisureland. In the satirical vein of Payne’s previous work, however, it turns out that Leisureland is just a microcosm of America, with the same amount of injusticies as in the big world.

Incorporating social satire into a unique premise, »Downsizing« is a science fiction drama-comedy that is both sharp and compassionate, defying all conventions in its brilliantly witty depiction of the perfect solution to all our problems.
