»Battle of the Sexes« tells the story of the legendary tennis match from 1973 between former three-time Wimbledon winner Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King, a women's world tennis champion with 39 Grand Slam titles. The game became a symbol of the female liberation movement and validated women’s place in professional tennis. Riggs, a male chauvinist far from his 1940’s prime, challenged King at the top of her career. When the match aired in 1973, the entire USA stopped and watched.
»Little Miss Sunshine«’s Dayton and Faris direct Oscar winner Emma Stone and Steve Carell in this tense yet humorous drama. As King herself explained to the New York Post, “It’s not just a tennis film. The movie is about what the match was about: social change, what was going on, (and) where I wanted tennis to go.” While highly entertaining, the film also functions as a contemporary parallel in a time that just saw a similar battle between the sexes on the highest political arena.
