School janitor Lee Chandler, played wonderfully here by a sorrowful-eyed Casey Affleck, leads a life so solitary it’s verging on the tragic. His day-to-day monotony is interrupted suddenly however, when he receives the devastating news that his much-loved older brother has died of a heart attack. What is more, his brother had a son to whom Lee has become sole-guardian. Propelled by familial duty, he swaps Boston for his native Manchester, Massachusetts; a somewhat picturesque, if forgotten, seaside town that offers a curious blend of comfort and conflict to the grieving Lee.

Chockfull of powerful performances - there has already been Oscars speculation surrounding Michelle Williams role as Lee’s estranged wife - Manchester by the Sea is an emotive yet ultimately uplifting piece, a stirring and soulful tapestry, depicting the everyday drama of ordinary people, woven by a master of observation.
