Surgeon Dr Romeo Aldea is immensely proud of his 18-year-old daughter Eliza, a sterling pupil who has been offered a scholarship to a British university on graduation. Everything hangs on her final grades, however, and in a cruel twist of fate, Eliza is attacked near the school premises the day before the final exam, leaving her in no state to sit the paper, let alone get the top marks she so desperately needs. Unbeknownst to the teenager, her seemingly respectable father begins to pursue increasingly desperate and illegal measures in a bid to save her, enlisting help from several members of the village along the way.

Described by its director as a personal film linked to the stage he is at in his own life, Mungiu's typically low-key direction - drawing little attention to itself - creates an engrossing narrative about a well-meaning father drawn into a web of lies and educational bureaucracy, and is boosted by moving performances from Adrian Titieni as Romeo, and Maria Drăguş as Eliza.
