Examining love and violence, two central themes that seem to have permeated the life and times of brilliant director Fritz Lang, Maugg’s eponymously named drama traces Lang’s experience from his formative years living under a violent father to his early years working as a director in postwar Berlin. It is during the latter period that Lang’s wife dies in mysterious circumstances and, reputed sadist and sex addict, Lang falls under suspicion of her murder. During this difficult time, the director makes the journey from Berlin to Düsseldorf in search of material for his first ‘talkie’. Whilst there, he involves himself in the investigations surrounding serial killer Peter Kürten.

Gordian Maugg’s black and white dramatization of Lang’s life is a clear-cut insight into the dark genius of the Austrian director. Combined live action and archive footage lends the film an added depth and authenticity, and the result is as electrifying and fascinating as Fritz Lang himself.
