When the FBI captured James “Whitey” Bulger in 2012, Bulger had been ranked behind only Osama Bin Laden on the FBI’s most wanted list for 12 years. Joe Berlinger’s documentary examines what happens when one of the most prolific gangsters in American history gets brought to trial. Acknowledging that he will spend the rest of his life in prison, Bulger chooses to spend the trial not proclaiming his innocence, but instead protecting his reputation by denying FBI claims that he served as an informant. As Berlinger turns his camera from the man behind bars to the men who put him there, both the veracity of the FBI’s claims and the ethics of its tactics become increasingly murky.

With the same investigative zeal that won him acclaim for his »Paradise Lost« Trilogy, Berlinger examines both Bulger’s violent history and the degree to which a corrupt justice system enabled his criminal empire to thrive. »Whitey« questions whether justice can truly be reached when truth remains elusive.
