Based on Philip Roth’s 2009 novel, »The Humbling« follows the aged actor Simon Axler who, after an accident in the middle of a performance, is admitted into a psychiatric clinic, and promises to continue therapy after he is released. Under the influence of alcohol and painkillers, Simon starts to work on his memoirs, which becomes more complicated when he develops an attraction towards his friend’s lesbian daughter. He half-heartedly struggles to remain productive as well as to continue breathing, while his deranged and delirious mind turns fiction into reality, and reality into fiction. With shades of dementia and depression, this pitch-black comedy is a tour de force for Al Pacino, whose performance conveys the complex layers of Philip Roth’s dirty old man. Along with David Gordon Green’s »Manglehorn«, »The Humbling« marks a long overdue and highly welcome return to the limelight for Al Pacino.
