What defines a man and what is required for a boy to become a man? A young teenage boy is forced by his village to pass into manhood through a painful male circumcision ritual called Ukwaluka. He is also confined in a remote hut and painted white as a goat. Practiced by the Xhosa speaking people of South Africa, Ukwaluka is considered the most important milestone of a boy’s life. It is also considered to be a cure for homosexual desire. Based on the novel “A Man Who Is Not A Man” by Thando Mgqolozana, director John Trengove tells the gripping story of a young teenage boy’s reluctant transformation and his desire for escape.
