A missing girl, Cassandra, was kidnapped a decade ago at a roadside rest stop, never to be found. Suddenly, traces start appearing online, suggesting that Cassandra might be alive in captivity. The case is re-opened by two local police officers of the slumbering snow capped Niagara Falls, closely followed by the both bereaved parents. A cobweb of crime, mystery and uncanny old men, reveals itself for the seekers of truth. »The Captive« is a return, of sorts, to the theme of director Atom Egoyan’s acclaimed »The Sweet Hereafter«, dealing with the loss of a child in a wintery landscape. The cast, including an impressive Ryan Reynolds as well as stellar performances by Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos and Kevin Durand, leads the way into a parallel plot, each dealing with the different layers of the crime, concerning both the grieving parents and the police officers. With the mélange of Egoyan’s major occupations– surveillance, voyeurism and heart-wrenching drama – »The Captive« shows the filmmaker in his finest form.
