Keith Miller’s profound and touching second feature film »Five Star« continues in the atmospheric and gritty spirit of his debut feature »Welcome to Pine Hill«, but with an even more honed outlook on urban life in Brooklyn and the characters that inhabit it. The film revolves around John, whose estranged father gets gunned down, and the gang member Primo (real-life Brooklyn Bloods gang leader James Grant), who inducts him into the gang life. Throughout the film, Miller portrays the dynamic between them in the manner of a father-son relationship, as Primo’s charismatic persona slowly lures John into his ways. Yet getting up close and personal with the characters and showing off the gang’s violent deeds isn’t Miller’s only goal – he is just as interested in showing the goings-on that surround both men, as witnessed by the continuous use of wide shots in its exterior scenes. These highlight the streets of Brooklyn, giving the film a necessary dose of realism, and do not shy away from portraying their neighborhood for what it is.
