»Brides« is the feature film debut of director Tinatin Kajrishvili, who takes inspiration from her own life. Nutsa, a seamstress in the Georgian capital Tbilisi, struggles to keep in contact with Goga, the imprisoned father of her two small children. In the hope that it will bring them closer together, the separated lovers go through with a marriage in the prison, with a guard and a social worker as their witnesses. However, the wedding does not change the situation, and thus the tedious visits to the prison begin to wear Nutsa down. She must decide whether her priorities should lie with her husband or with herself. Director Kajrishvili’s husband served time in prison, and she endured a plight similar to that of Nutsa and the other women in the film who are waiting for their spouses’ release. Drawing on this experience the director has created a naturalistic depiction of a couple separated against their will and the attempts they make to regain their intimacy.
