In »The Mayor« the current situation in Mexico is shown through the eyes of Mauricio Fernández Garza, who served as the mayor of the Mexican municipality San Pedro Garza García from 2009 to 2012.

Since 2006, reports estimate that over 60 000 drug-related fatalities have occurred in Mexico. San Pedro Garza García is widely held as the wealthiest and safest municipality in Mexico. Since Fernanadéz Garza’s election win in 2009, he has fought to rid the town from the criminality that pervades Mexico; resulting in lower crime rates.

The audience gets to follow Fernandéz Garza through both important discussions on governing and the diversions that come with the job. He comes across as a complicated character, offering morally questionable opinions, which raise questions about his methods during his time as mayor. »The Mayor« offers a striking portrait of Fernández Garza as a leader of a small town and a powerful illustration of contemporary Mexico.
