Originally titled »The Road Back«, this feature from noted documentarian Alex Gibney, initially revolved around Lance Armstrong’s 2009 comeback. As Gibney was completing the film in 2010, the scandal surrounding Armstrong’s performance enhancing drug usage erupted, resulting in, among other things, a film no longer relevant. Gibney put the film aside, but decided to revisit the material in 2012, including new interviews with Armstrong.

The story of the disgraced cyclist is well known, but by telling a story about deception, Gibney spins the material with a fresh perspective. The audience is given insight into the anatomy of a convoluted and elaborate lie, while confronted with their own need for a perfect story. For many, Armstrong represented the perfect story of overcoming adversary and illness, and understandably many were emotionally invested in his success. Did the public’s need for a perfect story enable the lie and its ability to be hidden in plain sight? The mystery behind this, and how long it took for the truth to come out, lies at the heart of this fascinating documentary.
