When the apartheid regime fell in South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiracy to overthrow the government, became the country’s first democratically elected president. Mandela brought peace to the region, ending racial segregation and became an international icon for freedom. That’s the story most people know. The untold history however lies in a confidential plot for peace; in the influential involvement of a mysterious French businessman, Jean-Yves Ollivier, alias “Monsieur Jacques”, who has remained silent about his contribution, until recently. Little did the world know that Ollivier’s diplomatic skills and personal relationships on the front line, including risking his life to arrange meetings between bitter enemies, would ultimately be the key that opened Mandela’s prison cell.

Convinced to come forward by co-director Mandy Jacobson after she discovered his involvement through meticulous research of archive footage, Ollivier unwinds a docu-thriller masquerade of human drama, intercut with exclusive interviews from heads of state and anti-apartheid activists, that proves history is something best shared in the open.
