The music scene known as Narcocorrido is a celebration of the violent and criminal acts of the Mexican drug cartels. It has become a multimillion-dollar industry on both sides of the Mexican border. For director and former war photographer Shaul Schwarz, the idolization of the Narcocorrido scene and the grim reality of Mexico’s drug problems are inseparable. The rise in fame of Narcocorrido says something much more horrific about the heavy drug problem in Mexico than the troubling lyrics of the songs themselves.

Telling this story from two sides, Schwarz presents the daily life of crime scene investigator Richi Soto in Juarez, Mexico and contrasts it with that of Edgar Quintero, a rising Narcorrido star in L.A. As unsettling as it is captivating, »Narco Cultura« captures the shock waves of addiction and violence on both sides of the border. Provided with a soundtrack of Narcocorrido music, this gritty documentary is a supremely effective plea for us to pay attention to the reality of the Mexican drug problem.
