In his debut feature documentary, »Blood Brother«, director Steve Hoover presents a study of his friend, Rocky Braat. Growing up without a close-knit family, Rocky has, throughout his life, looked for a replacement which could give his life meaning. He ends up finding it in the most surprising of places when he decides to dedicate his life to aiding HIV stricken children in Tamil Nadu, India.

With such a difficult subject matter one might expect the film to focus on the hardships endured by the film’s subjects. Although they cannot be ignored, Hoover also accentuates the love and joy shared by Rocky and the children. This contrast is reflected in the cinematography that ranges from colorful and playful to dark and ominous. These techniques employed by Hoover ultimately make the film both beautiful and touching.
