VIOLETTA PARRA WAS an iconic Chilean folksinger with a legendary influence on her country’s culture. Through her life, Parra was pain- stakingly trying to find her purpose in this world. In addition to her struggles with love and being a mother, Parra clambered with the transformations in her life: from a child raised in poverty to an internationally known folksinger, a celebrated visual artist in Paris and a national heroine in Chile.

The chilean singer-songwriter’s curious and overwhelming life is depicted truthfully and poetically in this biopic by director Andrés Wood. Actress Francisca Gavilán portrays Violeta Parra with a heartbreaking intensity, singing sad, beautiful songs like »Gracias a la Vida« and »El Gavilan«, which Parra wrote in an attempt to capture her country’s soul. Wood expertly juxtaposes the singer’s personal and inner problems with her rocket-like career and the result is a truly great film.
