In The World Before Her we meet two young Indian women in their struggle to gain independence and to retain their identities as family traditions constrain them and modern culture seeks to objectify them. We follow the life of Prachi, a girl from an abusive home who finds pride and purpose in Durgha Vahini, a Hindu extremist group accused of terrorism. In contrast to Prachi stands the life of Ruhi, a Miss India 2011 contestant who might be India’s next super celebrity, something that would grant her a platform to do whatever she wants – but at the cost of what she feels is her dignity and integrity.

The World Before Her captures a country at crossroads; caught in a schism between deeply rooted traditional values and increasingly prevalent foreign influences, creating dissonance which resonates profoundly through Indian culture. Director Nisha Pahuja offers the viewers a study of two different sides of India and two young women knowing that they can be more than the roles society confines them to.
