It is 1950 and Freddie Quell, a tormented WWII veteran, has spent the past five years drinking and drifting around. His passive aggressive tendecies and constant boozing makes it impossible for him to keep a job or live a reasonably normal life. One day, Freddie drunkenly boards a yacht and meets the strange and charismatic Lancaster Dodd. Dodd is the revered leader of a group called The Cause that preaches an out-there philosophy of extensive soul-searching for perfect inner balance.
Freddie Quell and The Master, as Lancaster Dodd’s followers call him, strike a bond of genuine affection and curiosity. Freddie finds himself more and more drawn to the fatherly cult leader.
Made by the master director himself, Paul Thomas Anderson, and with stunning performances by leading actors Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymor Hoffman, »The Master« is a captivating story that draws the viewer into the unbalanced relationship of a leader and his follower – of master and apprentice.
