IAO HE (LOTUS) works as a schoolteacher in a northern province of China. However, the school board does not welcome her unorthodox teaching methods and after her affair with a married man is unveiled she is forced to quit her job and she moves to Beijing. As she tries to find her place in a new world, she is obliged to choose between responding to unwanted romantic invitations from an elderly man or continuing her search for freedom while struggling against exploitation in a patriarchal society.
LIU SHU IS debuting as a director, screenwriter, producer, composer, costume designer and editor in this contemporary drama about a young woman’s battle between idealism and conformity in a country characterized by both. Liu Shu describes »Lotus« as “an anguished cry for China’s defeated youth”. But while the ones making the loudest noises may be heard first, it might just be the silent ones who make a lasting impact.
